Slarvigt snyggt!

Gorgeous Grisaille!

(down east dilettante)
Grisaille painting and wall papers have always been a love of mine. Grisaille (pronounced "griz eye") is the french word for shades of grey. This monochromatic technique was done both because artists could travel and do the work with out supplies, and the Grisaille painting could be a sample and/or under painting over which pigments could be applied.
Linda Coulter, a wonderful painter explains in her website: This concept was developed many centuries ago when pigments were very scarce. The Old Masters had only a handful of pigments to accomplish their beautiful results so they had to push each individual pigment to its fullest capacity to be able to achieve the luminosity in their art work that made them famous. In those days when pigments were extremely expensive, and it was also a way to save money. A sister to Grisaille is the less known Brunaille - which is in shades of brown. Below are some of my favorite examples.
The first is Martha Stewart's entry hall in her Turkey Hill House. This large mural stopped me in my tracks the first time I saw it . Lovely!
Here a common suburban two story entry turns extraordinary with this hand painted design.(down east dilettante)
This historic house turned museum is in Portsmouth, NH. The Moffat-Ladd house mural is likely Dufour wall paper from early 1900's, which depicts the Bay of Naples. To learn more about this wonderful house click here.

Here antique wall paper panels found at the Louvre are stunning. Read more about them on Architect Design here.

(Cote de Texas via Edie van Breems)

One of my favorite images is from Cote de Texas via Edie van Breems of Libby Holsten's home click here. The curves of Mora clock wonderfully compliment the mural behind it.

I love the room above, though not traditionally Grisaille or Brunaille, the addition of the shades of green and the side panel painting make for a gorgeous wall.

I adore this 18 century hand blocked Grisaille wall paper from Wendy Lewis at the Textile Trunk. You may not be aware of this, but Wendy also has a gorgeous selection of rare antique wallpapers.

This particular piece took my breath away! It is just stunning in shades of cream and gray. I envision it framed in my Living room or Dining room like a rare work of art, or perhaps I could cover a screen with it. Oh the possibilities!

Though Wendy does not always list every gorgeous paper she has (her wallpapers move fast and are in great demand by her interior designer buyers) send her an email and she will let you know what treasures she has recently found. Click here to contact Wendy.
If you do decide to buy this let me know how you use it. But if its sold by the time you read this, you may end up seeing it in one of my clients homes or even in my own house because I just can't stop thinking about it!!

{ Patterns that make a statement }

Don´t be afraid of pattern. Sometimes bigger is better, especially in a small space. And even in the most classic room, an oversized  geometric will heighten drama and elevate style. Here are some ideas...

Do you have a wallpaper with pattern in your home?

Do you want some more ideas about wallpaper? See my previous posts about it here.

{ Perfect for decoration! }

You have probably seen ladders in some of my earlier posts, but I have to show you again because it´s such a wonderful way to decorate a room. My suggestion would be to put the ladder in your hallway or bedroom, and decorate it with your favorite clothes, handbags, shoes, accessories or other items that you love.

Do you have a ladder in your home, or would you like to have one?

{ Bright, light and welcoming }

Hi all! I wanted to share this home with you today. It is such a bright and beautiful home with some great details that could spicy up any home. One thing you might take notice of is the use of sheep hide on the coach and the coffee table. A very nice touch!

I love how they designed this kitchen and its functionality. You have the great work space in one corner, and the long bench that is also part of the dining table. And of course the cooking island that creates a nice centre - just perfect.

Lastly, such a welcoming hallway with lots of light. Also notice the bench here as well, which gives you a lot of storage space.

What kind of details do you like about this home?

{ A wonderful kitchen }

Let´s start this week with something adorable. This white kitchen shows that it is all about the details. Imagine this room without the pink textiles, the flowers/herbs and the lovely KitchenAid mixer. They all together give life and charm to this kitchen.

Are you good with details in your home?

{ Happy Saturday }

I hope you all are enjoying the summer and the weekend.

{ Savon de Marseille }

What is it with this soap that makes it so popular? I got a feeling that almost everybody has it nowadays. I thought they only sold it in Europe, but gladly I just found out that they have it here in the US as well. There is something about the design that I love - maybe it is the simplicity?

Anyway I´m ordering the liquid soap online today - so in a few days I will be a happy owner of this "famous" Savon de Marseille. If I only could make up my mind on which color...

Do you have this beauty? What kind of color do you have, and is there a fragrance you would recommend?

Glad midsommar!

{ Decorating with pictures }

Have you thought of all the options you have when it comes to decorating with pictures and art? If you are redecorating quite often, a great idea would be to place them on a shelf like they did in some of these photos, and maybe add some other decorating items like letters, flowers, books etc. So when you get tired of it, you can just replace it with something else. Suits ME just perfect :)

Here are some different ideas for you...
